Nordic Ski Day

An early morning drive to start skiing, is always nice, especially when the temperature was only -3C.
The location of this picture, is at the NW corner of HWY 16 and Elk Island National Park.

If you are out early, the possibility of wild life is increased. I was fortunate today as I saw moose in  two different places about 2 km apart on the ski trails at Blackfoot Recreational Area.

The moose did not want to move. I talked to it as I took 3 pictures, and then when I was done, I went right at it, yelling with my poles straight ahead and high. Playing chicken or bluffing a moose, is NOT recommended at any time, but as it is spring, it has a better chance of success, then in the fall. The moose looked far bigger in real life!!

Being out on the ski tails for over 4 hours, you need to take a break, and get some food and drink into yourself. This was a nice spot, and my turn around point. Animal tracks were everywhere, but I did not see any more wildlife.

Taking a picture never seems to make the hill look as steep as it is, but never the less the trails were slow, soft and enjoyable. It was cloudy and would occasionally snow. Breaking trail with over 1 cm of snow, is a good strength workout, especially when my skis were slow.

Well the snow is not yet done for the winter, so get out there and enjoy!
